Helllo! :) I already covered some of this topic in my "about me" blog, so I'm going to go over again with a lot more detail. This is how I was called to this mission field...
Since I have remembered, the Lord has always put it on my heart to do missions work. With my church being small, however, I had never really been presented with the opportunity...or so I thought.
In the summer of 2008 at a local church camp where I was a first year counselor, the Lord told me my church didn't have to be huge for me to go on a mission trip. After that summer, I searched for opportunities to go on a trip. I was obsessed! My friend Brittany, without knowing my complete obsession to go on a mission trip, asked me if I would like to go on a trip to Jamaica in the summer of 2009. Of course I wanted to, and I really thought God wanted me to as well. My family was supportive and all was good! In February 2009, my church took part in World Vision's 30 Hour Famine. After watching the video for the Study Tour, I fell in love with Africa and applied for the Study Tour. After a couple of months, though, I found out I was not accepted to go on the Study Tour and the trip to Jamaica fell through. Although I was discouraged, I knew the Lord didn't show me certain verses and speak to me for nothing.
After all of the things I had anticipated fell through, my close friend Jill asked me if I would be willing to go on a mission trip to Camden, New Jersey. I was a little torn because I had signed up to take a summer class that was suppose to begin the day we were to leave for Camden. I prayed and God showed me that my plans could not even compare to what He had in store. So, I dropped my class and packed for Camden, New Jersey! While in Camden, my team worked with an organization called "Urban Promise." Camden is a neglected, rough city that provides little for children. Urban Promise reaches out to the children stuck in the cycle of drugs and neglect and teaches them about the Lord. It was amazing to drive through the city and then reach the campus of Urban Promise. There was a complete change! In the middle of a run down, violent place, the Lord had created a safe haven. I instantly fell in love. I worked in a kindergarten classroom at the school located on the campus and the children made my heart melt. My passion to help those in need grew stronger and I knew I wanted to do something more before I even left Camden, New Jersey. Although this wasn't the out of country, adventurous mission trip I had planned for myself, God allowed me to go to prepare me for what was to come. God's plan are always better than what we have planned for ourselves.
When I got home from Camden, I began to develop an even larger passion and burden for Africa. The Lord works in ways that I can't even understand, because my friend Kati Bailey went to Swaziland with Adventures In Missions and little did I know that she would introduce me to AIM! After talking to Kati, the Lord worked everything out and here I am preparing for a 2 month mission trip to Africa. The Lord is so good!
My family, friends, and church family have been so supportive and helpful. Although there were some rough patches during my search for a trip, the outcome has already been well worth it all. The Lord has already shown me so many things and I know He will continue to do so!!
God Bless!
